I make it to the theatre from time to time, but hardly a regular on Broadway. The story really has to grab me or be an undisputed recommendation from several sources. When I heard The Color Purple was just down the street, I did not wait for the recommendations to come, I went and have been giving the recommendations ever since.
I adore the book by Alice Walker, one of my all time favorites. I would be lying if I did not acknowledge that Jennifer Hudson headlining a cast as well as Danielle Brooks from Orange is the New Black were a huge draw for me. By far it is the story and the importance of it that brought us to the theatre that night.
Many of you know JHud’s vocal ability is superior but what you will be happy to hear is that new comer, Cynthia Erivo, along with the entire cast live up to the “Jennifer Hudson standard.” Erivo played the part of Celie perfectly. Prepare to be roller coaster journey with her. Jennifer Hudson’s contract is for six months, which would have her finishing (granted she does not opt in for an extension) just shy of the June 12th Tony Awards. I am not sure what Cynthia Erivo’s commitment is.
This is musical I cannot recommend enough. Go get tickets. You will not be disappointed.
